Socials and Networking

Social and networking events

This year at RSECon we’ve organised many opportunities for socialising with attendees that you know, and to facilitate networking with those which you don’t.

Meet and Greet (Monday)

Monday Afternoon at Oculus (Room TBD).

This new session format has been added in response to feedback received during RSECon24.

The short meet and greet sessions are intended to provide a welcome and supportive environment for attendees, such as those attending for the first time, that would like to meet others and chat with members of the conference committee ahead of the conference.

Welcome Social

Monday Evening at Rootes Restaurant.

The classic RSECon welcome social returns, this year at Warwick University’s Rootes restaurant, located within the Rootes building. A buffet dinner will be served, and you can sit down with friends and colleagues ahead of the conference.

Attendees hoping for a quieter environment during this social are encouraged to use the seating outside the Rootes restaurant in the foyer. This area is likely to be calmer, with several quiet alcoves available.

Meet and Greet (Tuesday)

Tuesday Morning at Oculus (Room TBD).

This new session format has been added in response to feedback received during RSECon24.

The short meet and greet sessions are intended to provide a welcome and supportive environment for attendees, such as those attending for the first time, that would like to meet others and chat with members of the conference committee ahead of the conference.

Poster Session

Tuesday Afternoon at Oculus (Room TBD).

This session will allow you to meet with the poster presenters to ask them about their work, whilst enjoying a free drink ahead of the formal dinner.

The poster presenters are all eligible to win a prize for the favourite poster among attendees, so be sure to vote for the best one before you leave this session.

Formal Dinner (with Entertainment)

Tuesday Evening at Rootes Panorama Suite.

We’re bringing the formal 3-course dinner back with a twist! Rather than having to decide between open or assigned seating, we’re attempting a novel hybrid to both facilitate meeting new people, whilst still allowing you to sit with a friend.

Each table, seating 10 people, will be assigned a topic assumed of interest to many attendees. Attendees can then sit at a table with a topic they’re keen to discuss, to meet other attendees with at least one shared interest.

We’re still drafting the table topics, if there’s a popular one you think we’ve missed please let Robert Chisholm know via the SocietyRSE Slack. We’re hoping for every attendee to have a good number of options to choose from, and they don’t need to all be work related (e.g. we know that many RSEs enjoy climbing).

You’re not required to talk about the topic all night. We simply hope this will aid networking among attendees, whilst also allowing people to sit with a friend.

After food has been served, there will be a presentation from the comedian Matt Parker (often known as Stand-up Maths).

Again, the Rootes atrium will be available for a quieter environment, however the dinner and entertainment will only be available in the main room.

Distributed Social

Wednesday Evening at The Piazza / Rootes Building.

There was a positive reaction to last year’s distributed social, so we’re trying it again. Whether you want to catch up with your friends, explore the Warwick campus alone or just relax in your accommodation, there’s something for everyone with the distributed social.

We’re organising for food trucks to visit the Piazza outside the Rootes building, and the bar to be open inside so that you can get your dinner. Around this you can partake in one of the local activities we’ve identified.

More details soon!
